Birthdays Can Be A Time For Reflection

Happy Birthday Balloons

I just finished reading Screw Business As Usual, by Richard Branson. It's a good book filled with case studies and real-life advice for the entrepreneur.The line from the book I'm thinking about today is, "If you didn't know how old you are, how old do you think you would be?"

Certainly this question is appropriate on my birthday. But seriously, take a minute and re-read the sentence and really think about it. If you didn't know how old you were, how old would you be?

I think this is a great question. Age has always been something I have never really paid much attention too. Two years ago I went through the entire year telling people I was a year older than I really was because my wife and kids had me convinced I was that old on my previous birthday. Didn't affect me one bit. Didn't change the way I behaved one bit. Didn't change my routine one bit. Only meant that I told people I was 52 when I was really 51. When I came upon my 52nd birthday and realized I had misspoke for an entire year it was sort of humorous. But it really didn't change a thing.

"If you didn't know how old you are, how old do you think you would be?"This plays both ways. I know people who are 60 and act like they are 80. Maybe age is just a mental state. Maybe age is a result of our physical state. Maybe we feel our age as a result of our health.

Personally, I think our mind is incredibly powerful. I think our mind can overpower our health, our physical state and our age and I think I'm living proof of that.I may be 53 in years of age but in my mind I am still in my late 20s or maybe my early 30s. Many would say behaviorally that is not a good thing. Obviously I disagree. And, like I always say, "Why change a good thing!"

Anyway, in honor of my birthday, take a minute and think about Sir Richard Branson's question, "If you didn't know how old you are, how old do you think you would be?"

Tell me what you come up with in the comments below.

My How Time Flies!

I can't believe its been since April since I posted anything here. I've been diligent about posting on The Fried Side, writing for, and publishing my newsletter. Maybe I'm just out of ideas to write about. At one point I thought about shutting this baby down, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I thought I'd have some topics that would spring to mind and fit nicely right here. Maybe this will still happen. So, if you're reading this and you have topic ideas that I'm not covering elsewhere, please do let me know! Hopefully, something will come to me soon. Or, maybe I'll find a way to add an extra hour to the day and use that to write something here!

@bradfriedman v. @anycelebrity

Me v Any Celebrity was no competition. The celebrity's more interesting, a bigger re-tweeter and more social. I'm a bit sad, but I'll get over it one day. Check it out here.

Are You Thinking About Dying?

I came across this infographic today and thought it was worth sharing. I know this isn't a subject most people like to discuss. Facing our own immortality is often difficult. In spite of that, I think it is a good idea to do some planning so your family doesn't get stuck with a bunch of bills they weren't expecting. Since none of us know when it will be our time, maybe the time to plan is now.
